Project overview

The operation moved a 300 tonne super grid transformer from its delivery point to its final position using a 550 tonne girder bridge transport system. Hyundai Electric was the project organisation for the transformer and Collett Transport carried out the specialist heavy transport and installation works. The activity ran across several phases, from arrival on site through to the transformer being set down in position.

Our role

Featherstone Safety provided an independent health and safety advisory and observation presence for the duration of the operation. The engineering methodology, the transport arrangements and the lifting plans were designed and controlled by the appointed specialists. Our role was to observe the work as it happened, raise anything of concern at the time it arose, and record what took place.

That separation matters. An independent observer is useful precisely because they are not the party planning or directing the work, and nothing in this case study should be read as Featherstone Safety having approved or controlled the specialist methodology.

Activities observed

• Arrival and preparation of the transformer and the transport equipment
• Transfer onto the girder bridge transport system
• Movement of the load across the site
• Skidding and alignment over the final position
• Setting down and release of the load
• Interfaces between the transport crew, the lifting teams and others working nearby

Outcome

No significant health and safety issues were identified during the observed operation. Daily activity and safety reports were provided throughout, giving a written record of what was observed on each shift and of anything raised at the time.

The transformer was delivered, transferred, skidded and set down in its final position.
