    How an ISO project runs

Every ISO project is scoped individually, but most follow the same sequence. Each stage has its own deliverables, so you can start with a gap assessment and decide on the rest with a clear picture of the work involved.

    1. Step 1

      Gap assessment

A structured review of your current arrangements against ISO 45001, ISO 14001 or both, using documents, interviews and observation of how work is really done. You receive graded findings and a prioritised roadmap.

    2. Step 2

      Scope and plan

Agree the scope of the management system, the sites and activities it covers, who owns each part and a realistic timetable that fits around the business.

    3. Step 3

      Implementation

Develop the procedures, registers and records the standard requires, building on what already works. Arrangements are tested in practice with the people who will use them.

    4. Step 4

      Internal audit and management review

A full internal audit cycle and a management review based on real performance information, with corrective actions closed out before assessment.

    5. Step 5

      Certification readiness

Evidence checks, help choosing a certification body and briefing for the people who will be interviewed. Certification is decided by the certification body and is never guaranteed.

    6. Step 6

      Ongoing support

Support with audits, reviews, updates and surveillance visits within an agreed scope, so the system stays current as the organisation changes.

ISO 45001: occupational health and safety

ISO 45001 sets out how an organisation plans, controls, checks and improves the management of health and safety risk. Its emphasis is on leadership, worker consultation and participation, hazard identification, legal compliance, contractor and procurement controls, and learning from incidents and audits.

    ISO 14001: environmental management

ISO 14001 covers how an organisation identifies its environmental aspects and impacts, meets its compliance obligations, controls significant impacts and improves its environmental performance over time.

    Integrated management systems

The two standards share the same high-level structure, so they combine well. In an integrated system, document control, competence, internal audit, management review and corrective action are run once rather than twice, which reduces duplicated procedures and makes management responsibilities clearer.

    Internal audits

Internal audit support is available, including training your own auditors. Where Featherstone Safety has implemented a system, we are open about the limits on auditing our own work and agree with you how impartiality is maintained.

Featherstone Safety is a consultancy, not a certification body. Certificates are issued by certification bodies, ideally accredited by UKAS, after their own independent assessment. See ISO consultant vs certification body.

ISO consultancy in Oxfordshire and the Cotswolds

Featherstone Safety is based in Oxfordshire, so on-site gap assessments, implementation days and internal audits are straightforward to arrange across the county and the Cotswolds.
