Environmental management for operational businesses

For a manufacturer, contractor or logistics operator, ISO 14001 is not about general sustainability statements. It is about knowing which of your activities can harm the environment, what the law and your customers require of you, and having controls that work on a busy shift. A well-built environmental management system also gives you a defensible answer when a client, a regulator or a neighbour asks how you manage pollution, waste and resource use.

ISO 14001:2026 was published in April 2026. It keeps the purpose and overall structure of the standard but asks organisations to consider a broader set of environmental conditions when assessing their context, risks and opportunities, including pollution, resource availability, climate change, biodiversity and ecosystem health, and it formalises how changes are managed. New systems should be built to the 2026 edition.

What implementation covers

Environmental aspects and impacts

Identifying the aspects of your activities, products and services that interact with the environment, such as emissions to air, discharges to drains, waste streams, fuel and chemical storage, noise, energy and water use, and deciding which are significant using criteria that are defensible and repeatable. A life-cycle perspective matters too: what happens upstream in your supply chain and downstream when your products are used and disposed of.

Compliance obligations

A maintained register of the legal requirements and other obligations that apply to you, and a method of evaluating compliance. For operational businesses this commonly includes waste duty of care, oil and chemical storage rules, environmental permits or discharge consents where they apply, packaging obligations, and customer or planning conditions. We identify what applies to your sites rather than copying a generic list.

Environmental objectives

Objectives that are linked to your significant aspects and obligations, measurable, owned and resourced, rather than targets chosen because they sound good.

Operational controls

The controls that stop significant aspects causing harm: bunding and spill response, waste segregation and transfer records, maintenance of plant that could leak or emit, contractor and supplier requirements, and arrangements for changes to processes or sites.

Emergency preparedness

Planning, equipment and practice for environmental emergencies such as spills, fire water run-off and releases, aligned with your health and safety emergency arrangements.

Monitoring and evaluation

Deciding what to monitor and measure, how often and against which limits. Specialist sampling is carried out by competent providers. The system makes sure it happens, that results are evaluated, and that they reach management.

Internal audit, management review and certification readiness

A full internal audit cycle, a management review based on real performance information, and a readiness review before the certification body's stage 1 and stage 2 audits.

Already certified to ISO 14001:2015?

Organisations certified to the 2015 edition will need to move to ISO 14001:2026. Your certification body will confirm the transition arrangements and deadline that apply to your certificate. For most well-run systems the transition is evolutionary rather than a rebuild: updating context and risk assessment for the broader environmental conditions, formalising change management, and checking that objectives, controls and evaluation of compliance still reflect the new requirements. We can carry out a transition gap review and support the changes.

Integrating with ISO 45001

Environmental and health and safety management share many processes, from document control to internal audit and management review. Where you need both, see integrated management systems or ISO 45001 implementation. Mining and quarrying operators can see our ISO management systems for mining programme.

What affects cost and duration

The number of sites, the nature and scale of your environmental aspects, whether you hold permits, your starting point and the time your team can give the project. We scope each project and confirm a fixed fee in writing. Certification body fees are separate.

Indicative pricing

ISO 14001 implementation

Consultancy from £5,995

Typical investment £6,000 to £12,000, depending on scope. Independent certification fees are additional.

Optional software support

Some clients use Featherstone Safety Hub, our separate health and safety software, to keep parts of their management system running between audits. Its features include a document register with version control, corrective action tracking, inspection and incident records and training records, and the Professional plan adds an environmental aspect register and legal compliance log.

It is entirely optional. Using it does not make a management system conform to ISO 45001 or ISO 14001 on its own, and the software itself is not ISO certified.

Why Featherstone Safety

Featherstone Safety Ltd is an independent UK occupational health and safety consultancy providing ISO management system consultancy and implementation support. Thomas Featherstone holds the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety and IOSH Managing Safely, is a Technical Member of IOSH (TechIOSH), and has eight years in safety-critical work.

  • Systems that match the work. We build processes around how your organisation actually operates, so they survive contact with an auditor and with day-to-day pressure.
  • Independent of certification. We are not a certification body and we do not issue certificates. Certification decisions are always made by an independent, accredited certification body.
  • Practical site experience. Recent work includes on-site health and safety advisory and observation support during the delivery and installation of a 300 tonne super grid transformer. That was health and safety advisory work, not ISO consultancy, and it is not an endorsement of our ISO services.

Frequently asked questions

Which edition of ISO 14001 should we implement?

ISO 14001:2026, published in April 2026. New systems should be built to the current edition. If you are already certified to ISO 14001:2015, your certification body will confirm the transition arrangements for your certificate.

Does ISO 14001 certification mean we are legally compliant?

No. Certification shows that your environmental management system meets the standard, including having a process to identify and evaluate compliance with your obligations. It does not replace those obligations or certify that you meet them.

Do we need environmental monitoring equipment?

Only where your compliance obligations or significant aspects require monitoring. Where specialist sampling or measurement is needed, it is carried out by competent providers. The management system makes sure it is planned, done and acted on.

Can ISO 14001 be combined with ISO 45001?

Yes. Both standards share the same high-level structure, so shared processes such as document control, competence, internal audit and management review can be run once, while environmental aspects and health and safety risks are still assessed in their own right.

Can you guarantee certification?

No. Certification is decided by an independent certification body after its own audits. We make sure the system is complete, operating and evidenced before the audit, and help you respond to any findings.
